Snowflakes are hard to handle. It both depresses and frustrates me that our efforts to promote social justice have devolved into arguments about semantics. I guess that’s what happens when you get a bunch of writers together. There is not a day that goes by that I do not hear or read about how someone phrased something just slightly wrong. It is people who cannot argue on the merits or have no intention of dealing with the underlying issues that obsess about the words. Yeah, yeah, words matter. But, they matter when they matter and not when they don’t. We should try to speak precisely, to convey meaning, to be understood. Everything we say is not poetry. We do not need to torture some hidden meaning out of every phrase. Let’s just get on with it; there is hard work in front of us, and time is running out.
